Session Details

In our presentation, we will discuss our experience researching, developing, building,
and implementing an open access accessible online course for media makers including
our inspiration, challenges, user responses and next steps.

Making Accessible Media: Accessible Design in Digital Media is a fully accessible open
access online course that focuses on representation of disability in media, video
captioning, audio transcription, described video and live captioning for broadcast,
alternative text for image description and offers tutorials on how to make accessible
documents and presentations. A Blackboard version of the course is available to all
Humber College Media Studies students, shaping the next generation of content
creators.

This course originated with one core set of principles: the need to produce and share
accessible media content. This course is part of an ongoing dialogue through which
curriculum, teaching tools and resources continue to evolve. Developed in consultation
with Internal and External Advisory Committees made up of Humber staff,
administration and faculty as well as people with disabilities and lived experience,
Making Accessible Media: Accessible Design in Digital Media is now in place to train all
4,000+ SMSIT students enrolled in 38 different degree, diploma and certificate
programs. Over 80% of these programs produce broadcast-ready materials for a variety
of programs including: Journalism, Film Production, Broadcast Television and
Videography, Public Relations. Media Communications and more.

Topic Areas:
• Faculty Instruction/Accessible Course Design
• Including Accessibility in Curriculum

Key Points:
• Teaching Media Accessibility to a large, global audience
• Review the imperative for mindfulness of accessibility and inclusion in
